Understanding Stainless Steel: Types, Differences, and Uses

Introduction to Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a versatile and popular material used in various industries and applications. It’s excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and aesthetic appeal give it high reputation among all materials.  Stainless steel contains  different types based on its metallographic organization. The three main types are ferritic stainless steel, austenitic stainless steel, and martensitic stainless steel.

Ferritic Stainless Steel (400 Series)

Ferritic stainless steel, represented by grades like Gr13, G17, and Gr27-30, has high chromium content. It offers good corrosion resistance and are commonly used in automotive applications.

Austenitic Stainless Steel (300 Series)

Austenitic stainless steel is the most common type of stainless steel. Grades like 304, 316, and 321 represent the the stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance, high ductility, and good formability. You can widely find it in various industries, including food production equipment, chemical equipment, and nuclear energy.

Martensitic Stainless Steel (200 Series)

Martensitic stainless steel, represented by grades like 1Gr13, has the characteristics of high carbon content. It offers good hardness and the applications likes where high strength and wear resistance are required.

Differences Between Stainless Steel Grades

There are several differences between stainless steel grades, including composition, specifications, and performance.

Composition

The composition of stainless steel varies depending on the grade. For example, 304 stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 9% nickel, while 201 stainless steel contains 16-18% chromium and 3.5-5.5% nickel. These differences in composition give stainless steel variations in corrosion resistance and other properties.

Specifications

Stainless steel plates are commonly available in two types: 201 and 304. 304 stainless steel is of higher quality, more expensive than 201 stainless steel. China often imports 304 stainless steel, and home-produced 201 stainless steel.

Performance

When it comes to performance, 316L stainless steel offers the best corrosion resistance, same as 304 and 321. 201 stainless steel has the poorest corrosion resistance, making it more affordable but less durable.

Uses of Stainless Steel

The different grades of stainless steel have various applications:

  • Households commercial kitchens, and for ordinary decoration purposes commonly use 304 stainless steel.
  • Stainless steel is superior corrosion resistance. Food storage tanks, ship supplies, and medical equipment  apply 316 stainless steel.
  • Heat-resistant applications, such as Xitong chemical equipment and nuclear energy often uses 321 stainless steel.

Understanding Stainless Steel Thermos Cups

We recommend two types of stainless steel thermos cups:

316L stainless steel and 304 stainless steel. The 316L stainless steel thermos cup offers superior corrosion resistance, making it ideal for hot beverages and acidic drinks. The 304 stainless steel thermos cup is also a good choice, providing excellent durability and heat retention.
